Found behind the ear, the bacterial infection known as mastoiditis attacks the mastoid bone. Usually it results from untreated or severe middle ear infections (otitis media). From the middle ear to the air cells in the mastoid bone, the infection travels and causes inflammation, oedema, and pus development. Typical complaints include ear pain, swelling behind the ear, fever, ear discharge, and hearing loss. Severe cases could lead to problems including facial nerve injury, meningitis, or brain abscess.
To evaluate the degree of infection, diagnosis combines imaging studies such as CT scans with physical examination and ear discharge analysis. Strong intravenous antibiotics are typically part of treatment, although in severe cases, surgical intervention, such as mastoidectomy, may be needed to clear the infection and stop consequences.
Before medicines came along, mastoiditis was previously a major cause of childhood death. Though rare nowadays with early diagnosis and quick treatment, the illness still qualifies as a medical emergency. Early treatment of ear infections and routine ear exams—especially for children—are part of preventative actions. Early medical attention is critical since untreated mastoiditis can cause major problems.
