Psoriasis: A Chronic Skin Condition
A chronic autoimmune skin condition, psoriasis involves fast skin cell turnover that results in redness, irritation, and thick, scaly areas. Affecting millions globally, it can show up on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back, among other body areas. Though the precise origin is unknown, immune system and genetic elements are critical. Triggers such as stress, infections, trauma, and certain drugs can exacerbate the disorder.
Psoriasis can be in numerous forms; the most often occurring variety is plaque psoriasis. The later, severe and rare kind is erythrodermic psoriasis; other types include guttate psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, and inverse psoriasis. Though they vary, symptoms usually include itching, burning, and broken skin, occasionally causing emotional pain and suffering.
Treatment choices depend on degree and could include phototherapy, topical therapies (corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues), and systemic drugs (biologics and immunosuppressants). Additionally helpful in managing symptoms are lifestyle modifications, such as moisturising, avoiding triggers, and keeping a good diet.
Although psoriasis cannot be permanently cured, early diagnosis and suitable therapy greatly increase quality of life. Personalised treatment and good disease management depend on seeing a dermatologist.
