Vasculitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
Affecting arteries, veins, or capillaries, vasculitis is a collection of rare disorders marked by inflammation of blood vessels. This inflammation may cause blood vessel walls to thicken, constrict, or weaken, which can limit blood flow to important organs and tissuesAlthough the precise origin of vasculitis is not always known, it is usually associated with autoimmune diseases, infections, some drugs, or hereditary elements. People of aPeople of all ages can be affected; it can be categorised as either primary (occurring independently) or secondary (related to other diseases, like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis).
Though the type and degree of vasculitis affect the symptoms, generally they include fever, tiredness, weight loss, muscle and joint discomfort, skin rashes, nerve damage, and organ malfunction. Severe cases might cause an aneurysm or organ failure, two potentially fatal complications.
Diagnosis is usually made using blood tests, imaging examinations (such as CT or MRI scans), and occasionally a biopsy of afflicted tissues. Often, we use corticosteroids and immunosuppressive medications to lower inflammation, although the degree and underlying cause determine the treatment. Sometimes biologic treatments or plasma exchanges are required.
Effective management of vasculitis and avoidance of consequences depend on early diagnosis and rapid treatment. Frequent medical visits enable one to track disease development and modify treatment as necessary.
