The chronic disorder known as primary hypertension, sometimes referred to as essential hypertension, is one in which blood pressure is constantly raised without a clear medical explanation. In around 90–95% of all instances, it is the most often occurring hypertension. Unlike secondary hypertension brought on by underlying diseases, including renal disease or hormone imbalances, primary hypertension originates from hereditary and lifestyle choices and develops gradually.

Sometimes prescribed to control blood pressure are drugs that include diuretics, beta-blockers, or ACE inhibitors.
