Jaw Fractures: Trauma, accidents, or impact injuries commonly cause a jaw fracture, which is a break or crack in the jawbone. This type of fracture can occur in either the upper or lower jaw; however, the lower jaw (mandible) is more usually impacted due to its position and exposure.
Causes of Jaw Fractures.
Blunt force trauma, such as vehicle accidents, sports injuries, falls, physical attacks, or even severe dentistry operations, typically causes jaw fractures. Conditions such as osteoporosis can also raise the risk of fractures. A direct impact to the face or mouth can cause the jaw to crack or break, resulting in tooth displacement or misalignment.
Symptoms of a jaw fracture
Common symptoms include discomfort or tenderness in the jaw, trouble opening the mouth, swelling or bruising around the jaw or face, and tooth misalignment. More severe cases may result in obvious deformities, haemorrhage, or numbness in the lower lip or chin.
Treatment of Jaw Fractures
The severity of the fracture determines the appropriate treatment. You can treat minor fractures with ice, pain medications, and soft meals. Severe fractures may necessitate surgical intervention, such as wiring the mouth closed or applying plates and screws to stabilise the bones. A comprehensive dental and medical examination is required to ensure appropriate healing and restore jaw function.
