Erythroplakia's causes, symptoms, and treatment
Erythroplakia, an uncommon but serious oral disorder, is characterised by red, velvety patches in the mouth that are not removable. Unlike leukoplakia, erythroplakia has a higher probability of progressing to oral cancer, making early diagnosis critical.
Causes and Risk Factors
The specific aetiology of erythroplakia is unknown, but it is closely associated with persistent irritation and lifestyle choices. Tobacco use (smoking or chewing), excessive alcohol intake, poor oral hygiene, and ill-fitting dental appliances are all significant risk factors. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly vitamin A, as well as viral infections such as human papillomavirus (HPV), may all contribute to its development.
Symptoms of erythroplakia
Erythroplakia causes well-defined, brilliant red patches on the tongue, gums, and inner cheeks. Unlike common mouth sores, these lesions do not heal themselves. Some people may report moderate soreness or burning, but many cases are asymptomatic, making regular dental check-ups necessary.
Diagnoses and treatments
We use a biopsy to diagnose cancer. If identified early, the lesion may be removed surgically or with laser therapy. Avoiding tobacco, avoiding alcohol, and practicing good dental hygiene can help prevent erythroplakia and lower the risk of cancer.
