A dental misalignment known as an underbite occurs when the lower front teeth extend past the upper front teeth during mouth closure. This condition, defined as Class III malocclusion, can vary in severity, affecting both appearance and oral function.
Genetic factors, poor jaw development, extended thumb-sucking, excessive dummy use, or mouth breathing during childhood are common causes of underbites. In some cases, jaw fractures or overcrowded teeth might exacerbate the condition. Common symptoms include difficulty biting and chewing, speech impairment, jaw pain, excessive tooth wear, and an increased risk of TMJ disorders. Severe underbites may also cause facial instability and difficulty closing the lips properly.
We make the diagnosis using a full dental examination, X-rays, and a bite analysis. Treatment options differ according to the patient's severity and age. Early intervention with braces, clear aligners, or specialised dental products can help children's jaws develop. In more serious cases, orthognathic (jaw) surgery may be required to realign the jaw for better function and look.
Regular dental check-ups and proper oral hygiene can help manage underbites, minimise the risk of complications, and improve both dental health and facial harmony.
