Tennis/Golfer's Elbow: Elbow Tendon Injuries Due to Overuse
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis) are common overuse injuries that affect the tendons surrounding the elbow. Tennis elbow occurs on the outside of the elbow, whereas golfer's elbow affects the inside. Both problems are the result of repetitive wrist and arm movements, which cause inflammation, pain, and paralysis.
These conditions are common among athletes, manual labourers, and people who perform repetitive tasks, such as typing, painting, or lifting. Symptoms include a burning or painful sensation, difficulty holding items, and soreness around the affected area. If left untreated, the discomfort may worsen and limit everyday activities.
A physical examination is used to make the diagnosis, and imaging tests such as X-rays or MRIs may be used to rule out other illnesses. Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory drugs, and physiotherapy activities to strengthen the tendons are all options for treatment. Using braces or ergonomic tools can help decrease elbow strain. In severe situations, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be necessary.
Prevention focuses on proper technique, warm-ups, and strengthening exercises to improve forearm and wrist flexibility. Early management is critical for avoiding chronic pain and ensuring a faster recovery, allowing people to resume normal activities without long-term suffering.
