Ankylosing Spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory condition.
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that mostly affects the spine and the sacroiliac joints, which connect the pelvis and spine. This inflammatory illness produces inflammation in these tissues, resulting in pain, stiffness, and limited flexibility. Chronic inflammation can lead to the fusing of spinal vertebrae, a condition known as ankylosis, which causes a loss of mobility and a stooped posture.
Symptoms typically appear in early adulthood, with persistent lower back pain and stiffness that worsen after periods of rest or inactivity. Other areas, such as the hips, shoulders, and even the ribs, may be impacted, reducing overall mobility. In some circumstances, AS can induce inflammation in other areas of the body, including the eyes (iritis), heart, or lungs.
The actual cause of AS is unknown; however, genetics play an important influence, particularly in those who carry the HLA-B27 gene. Physical therapy, exercise, and drugs such as NSAIDs, biologics, and DMARDs can all help reduce inflammation and preserve mobility.
Although there is no cure for AS, early detection and consistent therapy can dramatically improve quality of life by assisting patients in managing symptoms and leading an active lifestyle.
