Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition that affects joint health.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune condition that primarily affects the synovial lining of joints. Unlike wear-and-tear arthritis, RA develops when the immune system erroneously assaults healthy tissues, resulting in inflammation and joint destruction. This ailment usually affects joints symmetrically, such as the hands, wrists, knees, and ankles, but it can also affect other organs like the heart, lungs, and eyes in extreme cases.
Persistent joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and a restricted range of motion are common symptoms that worsen in the morning or after periods of inactivity. Fatigue, fever, and an overall feeling of malaise are all frequent. If left untreated, RA can cause joint abnormalities and disability, drastically reducing quality of life.
The specific aetiology of RA is unknown, however genetic factors, environmental triggers, and hormonal influences are thought to play a part. Smoking, obesity, and having a family history of autoimmune illnesses all raise the risk.
Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to successful RA management. Disease-modifying antirheumatic medications (DMARDs), biologics, and lifestyle adjustments including physical therapy and exercise are all options for treatment. While there is no treatment for RA, medical advances have allowed many patients to live active and productive lives despite their condition.
