Osteoporosis: a bone weakness caused by reduced bone density
Osteoporosis is a prevalent condition in which bone density decreases, resulting in weak and brittle bones that are more prone to fractures. Osteoporosis, also known as the "silent disease," advances without any visible symptoms until a fracture occurs, usually in the hip, wrist, or spine.
Osteoporosis can greatly accelerate the natural reduction in bone density that occurs with ageing. Hormonal changes, particularly a decrease in oestrogen in women after menopause, calcium and vitamin D shortages, sedentary lifestyles, smoking, and excessive alcohol use all raise the chance of developing osteoporosis. Genetics also play a role, making people who have a family history of osteoporosis more vulnerable.
Preventing and controlling osteoporosis requires a combination of lifestyle changes and medicinal treatments. Maintaining bone health requires a calcium and vitamin D-rich diet, frequent weight-bearing activity, and abstaining from tobacco and excessive alcohol use. In extreme cases, doctors may use drugs like bisphosphonates or hormone treatments to reduce bone loss and increase bone strength.
Early detection with bone density tests is critical to avoiding problems. Individuals can lower their risk of fractures and live a healthier, more active lifestyle by taking preventive measures and getting medical guidance when necessary.
