Root caries is the decay that happens on the root surfaces of teeth, usually when the gums recede and expose the susceptible dentin beneath. Dentin, unlike enamel, is weaker and more susceptible to bacterial infection, making root caries a prevalent problem, particularly among older persons.
The main cause of root caries is plaque accumulation. Plaque comprises microorganisms that create acids, which demineralise and dissolve dentin. Poor dental hygiene, dry mouth (xerostomia), a sugar-rich diet, and chronic medical disorders such as diabetes all increase the risk. Older people with exposed roots due to gum disease or rigorous brushing are especially vulnerable.
Maintaining excellent dental hygiene is essential for preventing root caries. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and using an antimicrobial mouthwash can help decrease plaque buildup. Regular dental examinations and expert cleanings are critical for early detection and prevention. Dietary adjustments, such as limiting sugary foods, also play an important effect.
We treat root caries based on their severity. Fluoride or remineralising chemicals can treat early-stage lesions.Maintaining a proactive approach to oral health is critical for avoiding root caries and ensuring long-term dental health.
