Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that can harm the tissues and bone that support your teeth. It often progresses from gingivitis, a lesser form of gum disease. Periodontitis, if left untreated, can cause tooth loss and other serious dental problems.
The problem develops when plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—accumulates on teeth and hardens into tartar, which can irritate the gums. The infection causes the gums to move away from the teeth, resulting in pockets that deepen with time. As the condition advances, it may destroy the bone that holds teeth in place.
Periodontitis symptoms include swollen and bleeding gums, persistent foul breath, receding gums, and loose teeth. Smoking, poor oral hygiene, diabetes, and a family history of gum disease all increase the risk of developing periodontitis.
Expert cleaning to remove plaque and tartar, along with medications to manage infection, is the usual treatment for periodontitis. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair damaged tissues or bone.
