Bacteria frequently causes a periodontal abscess, a localised infection of the tissues around a tooth, specifically the gums. The buildup of pus due to an infection, which can cause extreme pain, swelling, and redness in the affected area, distinguishes it. This type of abscess is often caused by untreated periodontal disease, in which plaque and tartar buildup creates pockets between the teeth and gums, allowing bacteria to proliferate.
Symptoms of a periodontal abscess include biting discomfort, gum tenderness, foul breath, and a swollen or red area around the affected tooth. In some situations, a noticeable pimple-like protrusion may form on the gum line, draining pus when touched.
If left untreated, the infection can develop, causing additional concerns such as tooth loss or infection spreading to other regions of the body. Immediate therapy is required to prevent this. The therapy often includes emptying the abscess, cleansing the infected area, and, in some cases, medications to manage the infection. In more severe situations, surgical intervention may be required to remove affected tissue.
Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits can help avoid periodontal abscesses.
