Peri-Implantitis

Peri-Implantitis is a dangerous inflammatory disorder that affects the tissues surrounding dental implants, much as gum disease affects natural teeth. It develops when bacteria invade the region, causing inflammation, bone loss, and, in severe cases, implant failure. This issue is often caused by poor dental hygiene, smoking, or uncontrolled diabetes, all of which can encourage bacterial growth and plaque deposition around the implant.
In some circumstances, X-rays may show apparent bone loss around the implant. Early identification and treatment are critical to preventing further damage and extending the life of the implant.
We often thoroughly clean the implant surface to eliminate plaque and tartar, possibly using laser therapy or scaling procedures. In severe cases, bone transplants or surgical procedures may be required to replace lost bone tissue. Preventative treatments, including regular dental check-ups and excellent oral hygiene, can dramatically lower the incidence of peri-implantitis.
If left untreated, peri-implantitis might result in implant loss. As a result, seeking professional care if any symptoms occur is critical to ensuring the long-term success of dental implants.
